Thank you to those who graciously supported our fund raising efforts in 2006-2007 and will continue to support our efforts in 2007-2008. Each year The Newcomers Club of San Juan sponsors several local charities. Last year the club gave in excess of $45,000 to the nominated charities. The charitable, non-profit organizations who intend to apply for funds with Newcomers next year (2008-2009) need to submit their applications in by December 31, 2007.

The first step for the missionaries was to establish a school. They opened a school in a farm house in Luquillo.
Later, a two story building was erected to house three classrooms, a library and audio/visual room downstairs and a boys' dorm with dorm counselors' residence upstairs. Since these modest beginnings, the school has grown steadily, and hundreds of students have passed through it. The Evangelical School for the Deaf is a Non Profit Organization under the United States tax code. In the 70s, the missionaries at ESD desired to change to a different home mission board and now serve under World Mission to the Deaf based in Whitby, Ontario, Canada.

We are grateful to the Newcomers Club of San Juan for including us among their charities. In addition to their most appreciated and steadfast support over many years, they have been a tremendous source for informing the community about our library's presence, mission, and services. Throughout the years many people learn of us and become members of our library as a result of the Newcomers Club of San Juan. Thank you!

Asociación Educativa Pro Desarrollo Humano de Culebra
La Asociación Educativa pro Desarrollo Humano de Culebra, Inc., is a small not-for-profit social services agency that has tried to fill the gaps in services available to Culebra’s children and families with special needs for more than 20 years. Supported by Newcomer’s Club, United Way, the Municipality of Culebra, and the state school lunch program, la Asociación offers a variety of unique services depending on the needs we identify. At present, we have an early stimulation program for children from 2 to 5 years old that promotes participants' development through structured and supervised educational activities and field trips. Children up to age 13 participate in field trips to enhance their cultural experiences and also come to our Center after school or on days when teachers are absent to help with the preschoolers and participate in educational activities themselves. In June and July, children through age 8 are welcome to participate in a day camp that focuses on environmental education and water safety. We serve the community at large through cultural excursions, workshops, and seminars on topics of interest to Culebrense. We also assist families with medical needs in a variety of ways. For some, we act as case managers, identifying providers on the Big Island (Puerto Rico), making appointments, and advocating on patients behalf to insurance companies or the Department of Health. For others, we accompany them to their appointments and act as advocates to ensure that patients understand their care. For others the assistance is primarily financial, helping to cover the costs of a procedure or medicine that is necessary but outside of the families reach. Still others come to us when they need specialized medical equipment and don’t know where to go to get it, or can’t afford it through traditional retail outlets. These services are unique in Culebra and are delivered with love and dedication by our small staff. We appreciate the help of Newcomers and all of our supporters. In addition to our grant funding we also accept gently used toys and books (preferably in Spanish), gently worn children’s clothes (to distribute to families in need), and individual and corporate donations. Thank you for your ongoing support!
