AARP Isla Verde English
Speaking Chapter
By: Rex
Seymour, CFP
One of the best kept secrets of the
Union Church is that the only English Speaking Chapter of the AARP in
Puerto Rico meets here in the Church on the second Wednesday of each
month. The AARP has more than forty Chapters in Puerto Rico, but this is
the only Chapter which conducts all its meetings in the English language.
Several years ago, the
American Association of Retired Persons officially changed its name to
AARP in recognition of the fact that a large percentage of its membership
is employed either full-time or part-time. The only prerequisite to
become a member of the AARP at the national level is that you be fifty
years of age or older, and the only prerequisite to join a local Chapter
is that you be a member of the national. If you would like to participate
in the activities of a local Chapter but do not belong to the national, we
can help you by providing you with the application form.
Our meetings begin at 1.30PM and last about ninety minutes.
Usually an outside speaker gives a presentation on a subject of interest
to midlife and older people. At the end of the meeting, refreshments
are served. Two annual fixtures are the Christmas party and the
annual picnic, which usually takes place in June.
If you are fifty or older, come and
join us at our next meeting! You are welcome as a visitor at two
meetings, with no obligation to join.
My cellular phone number is (787)
949-3059.
We look forward to seeing you!
Please email us at
[email protected] with any events coming
up, clubs, organizations etc that would be good additions to our resources.
